Christian stood up and stared in appreciation at the baby swing he’d put together later that night before casting a grin over to her, obviously proud of his handiwork.

She was seated in her usual spot on the end of the couch, trying to stay preoccupied folding tiny freshly washed baby clothes into smaller piles. Even though the thermostat barely registered sixty-seven in the room, she was roasting, something she blamed on the extra blood that coursed through her body.

Either that or the lurid thoughts she was secretly indulging in when she was sure Christian wasn’t looking. It had become her favorite pastime these past couple of nights, even if later she returned to bed alone.

“I told you that I was perfectly capable of putting everything together,” he continued, unaware of her less-than-chaste thoughts that had her wiping some sweat from her brow. “No sense paying a perfect stranger to do it for us.”

“And it only took you about four times longer than they promised to have it finished for us.”

“But then they would have been missing that certain little something that I, as the baby’s father, could impart on these beloved items.”

“Blood?”

“No, my dear. Love. A father’s love. And a little blood,” he said, glancing down at the two bandages that covered his wrist and hand before rubbing his hands together. He turned around to check out the pile of baby paraphernalia that took up an entire corner of the room. “What should I work on next?”

“You do realize it’s nearly ten o’clock, right? Why don’t you take a break? Here.” She tossed him a stack of the baby clothes from the basket that she’d washed earlier that night. “Help me fold and put these away.”

“As you wish,” he said.

“Thanks for being a good sport earlier today. About the picture for Myrtle. And the kiss,” she added, keeping her attention on the tiny little buttons that needed to be done up before she could fold it.

“It was my pleasure.”

“I saw you and Quinn share a few words,” she said.

“We definitely shared words. She doesn’t think very highly of me.”

“She’s just worried about me. That’s what big sisters do. You’re an older brother. I’m sure you feel just as protective of your brother and sister.”

“Where Astrid is concerned, I think I feel more sorry for the guys. She can hold her own. There is no small number of broken hearts she’s left in her wake. And Leo is even worse. But you’re right. If anyone did anything to hurt them, I wouldn’t hesitate to throw them into the dungeons.”

She laughed. “That’s one advantage, I suppose, of living in a palace or castle or wherever it is you live. The threat of the dungeons.”

“I wish you could come and see it. Not just the palace and the gardens but the view of the capital at night from a ship offshore. Of the countryside in summer when the hills are covered with the delicate blue flowers that I think you would call forget-me-nots.”

His face was so animated, so filled with pride that she couldn’t help but smile.
